Maslenitsa is a traditional Russian celebration marking the end of winter and celebrating arrival of spring, which normally takes place just prior to Lent.

Maslenitsa 2011 will be a spectacular programme of traditional music, dance and theatre performances and will include performances by the legendary rock group Moral Codex; pop group Chelsea, a product of the Russian reality TV show Star Factory (Fabrika Zvyozd); operatic sensation Kvatro; folk group Namgar, who represent the exotic Buryat and Mongolian regions of Russia; pop group A-Studio, bringing their trademark romantic-dance pop rock; decorated folk diva, Ludmila Rumina who is popular with every generation across Russia; Anastasia Stotskaya, one of the brightest stars on the Russian pop scene and winner of the ‘New Wave’ award; the Ivan Kupala Band, fusing traditional Russian folk songs with electro pop sounds; up-and-coming artist Matrekha, with her new style folk-jazz; Sergei Lazarev, originally one half of pop group Smash and now an award-winning solo artist; as well as one of the most exciting groups in Russia at the moment, folk-techno ensemble Bayan Mix. Plus a performance by the renowned Moscow State Dance Ensemble ‘Russian Seasons’, winners of the Russian National Treasure Award.

The children’s marquee programme will feature a special programme of performances by the award winning Theatre Chudaki, a presentation of Maslenitsa traditions with audience participation, performances of traditional songs by children’s groups as well as competitions and games.Around the square there will also be range of stalls serving a variety of Russian cuisines and regional delicacies, such as ‘Blini’ pancakes, as well as other kiosks selling traditional handicrafts and souvenirs.

The Maslenitsa festival is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Mayor London, the Russian Embassy in London, the Moscow and St Petersburg City Governments, Russkiy Mir Foundation, the Russian Cultural Centre, here in London, Pushkin House, The Russian Speaking Council of Great Britain and the organisation Russians UK.

Maslenitsa 2011 promises to be a spectacular and exciting festival, bringing Russian tradition and culture to the heart of London.
